Cataloguing the coins of the Berlin Coin Cabinet by region

The research goals of ImagNum are only achievable and valid if they are based on a representative database with sufficient geographical breadth and temporal depth. The recording of the Berlin collection contributes significantly to the material and object-historical dimension of the study of numismatic iconography. Coins from museum collections are, according to the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the canonical resource on the web. The collection of ancient Greek coins at the Coin Cabinet Berlin comprises 100,845 specimens and around 10,000 separately stored coins from excavations in Olympia, Samos, Priene and other places. This collection of Greek coins is unsurpassed worldwide due to its quantity, quality and typological diversity for a broad geographical area. It includes numerous unica and often the best-preserved examples of a coin type. These coins are photographed by the Coin Cabinet itself and recorded with basic data in the Interactive Catologue of the Coin Cabinet and put online (so-called yellow basis-entries). At the start of the project, 18,902 coins had already been published in the IKMK in their entirety (currently in 72 data record fields), so that an average of 3,678 ancient Greek coins are now to be published each year (the specific number depends on the regions to be covered, see below). As long as the workflow of the other subtasks is not hindered, holdings from other regions can also be brought forward to support further research projects. The editorial release will again take place in the Coin Cabinet.
